Kairuku-Hiri has a proud and rich cultural heritage. There are numerous local attractions, a variety of places of interest, rich cultural diversity, exotic traditional attire, beautiful picnic sites and friendly and hospitable people.

Local attractions are extravagant and unlimited. There are endless options to choose from for a satisfying and enjoyable experience in recreational and cultural activities. Local guides can be arranged to assist with sightseeing.

The Hiri Moale Festival has become an important cultural event held annually in mid-September in Port Moresby. This colourful festival is celebrated to commemorate the Hiri trade voyages undertaken by the Motuan people of Hiri, who traded clay pots for sago with the Gulf people. The replicas of 'lakatois', the giant double-hull canoes that were used in the olden days, set sail from Manubada Island and anchors on the shores of Ela Beach to the tune of dancing and singing.

Camping & Picnic - Mirigeda, Varirata, Yule Island, March Girls Resort, Hidiha Island and Crystal Rapids are some ideal spots for camping and picnics.

Nature Parks & Bird Watching - With fine views and jungle walking, the Varirata National Park, situated in Sogeri, offers a variety of opportunities for visitors and birdwatchers. This park is also a haven for native flora and fauna.

Fishing - Galley Ridge, an hour's drive from Port Moresby along the Hiritano Highway, offers one of the best fishing spots. Other fishing areas can also be located along the Kairuku-Hiri coastline. A variety of fish is offered for consumption or sale at local markets.

Diving & Snorkelling - Loloata Island, Motupore, Lion Island and Hisiu Point offers some of the best spots for fantastic diving and snorkelling.

Canoe Racing - Is a common activity in the coastal villages. This usually takes place during the windy periods of the year.
